AUNG SAN SUU KYI

Aung San Suu Kyi is the face of Burma. For more than twenty years, she has fought to free her country of authoritarian rule and establish democracy. Many people know about Burma’s political struggles, but very few know what Aung San Suu Kyi is really like and what she has been through. This biography provides an opportunity to look into the life of this global leader.

Aung San Suu Kyi: A Biography, published in 2012, speaks of her distinguished family. Her father, Aung San, fought for Burma’s independence from the British. The daughter of this Burmese hero went to a Methodist School and later pursued her education at the Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi, India. She then moved to Oxford to study at St. Hugh’s College.

Suu Kyi spent time between New York and England, and married a westerner named Dr. Michael Aris. Her travels across the globe gave her the chance to interact with people of different political, religious, and social standing. In 1988, Suu Kyi and her husband visited Burma, and during this visit, she decided to stay back in order to become involved in the country’s politics.

She soon became the General Secretary of the National League for Democracy and her party was victorious in the 1990 general elections. However, the military dictatorship of Burma put her under house arrest, where she remained for fifteen of the next twenty-one years. Suu Kyi was separated from her two sons as well as her terminally ill husband, but she continued to fight for her country’s freedom from the Burmese military.

In 1991, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Though she was confined to the four walls of her house, she started to gain international recognition for her brave fight. In November 2010, Suu Kyi was finally released.

Aung San Suu Kyi: A Biography shows Suu Kyi’s courage and her determination to fight against oppressive regimes at the cost of enormous personal sacrifices which proves what an inspirational leader she is. This book also highlights one of the biggest questions of modern times, which is “What needs to be done to evolve from a deeply authoritarian system into a democratic one?”.

Bengtsson conducted interviews with Aung San Suu Kyi while writing this book. Those who are eager to learn about her as well as Burma’s political struggles must not miss out on Aung San Suu Kyi: A Biography.
